Shuttleworth College

Shuttleworth College Modern Farming is not only concerned with livestock and crop production, but also involves areas related to countryside access and stewardship. Changes in farming practice have created new and varied career opportunities with farms reliant on a skilled and adaptable workforce.

The best way to acquire these skills is to study and work on a real commercial farm and that is the opportunity that Shuttleworth can offer.Forty hectares of the Estate are retained exclusively for student work where the farm becomes the largest classroom on the campus. Students increase their knowledge and confidence by carrying out all the tasks on the farm including cultivating, drilling and crop walking, supported by the agriculture department staff who have a great deal of experience in the industry and in working with students.

The full range of agricultural activities carried out reflects current local farming practice. Crop rotations include cereals, rape and sugar beet. The College also has a small pedigree pig herd allowing students to work with a niche marketing venture. Other livestock include sheep, which graze much of the parkland around the campus providing the college with an attractive and traditional setting.
