The
University of Central Lancashire traces its roots back to the Institution
for the Diffusion of Knowledge founded in Preston in 1828. The early
founders were drawn from local businessmen, including Joseph Livesey
who later played an important role in the development of teetotalism.
Now the University offers a wide range of degree based courses in agriculture
and related land management.
It developed due to a legacy from EH Harris in 1887 through the Harris Institute and Harris College to become Preston Polytechnic in 1973 (it was the last of the Polytechnics to be founded by Mrs Thatcher while she was Minister for Education). Reflecting the Polytechnic's mission to serve the whole of Lancashire and not just the town of Preston, it became Lancashire Polytechnic in 1984 and was granted University status in 1992 when it became the University of Central Lancashire.
