Spring Barley - July
An ear of barley, note the long spikes that emerge from each grain, these are known as awns.

The crop appears shiny at this time of year as the ears begin to bend over and the awns reflect falling light.
Corn marigold in a conservation strip in spring barley. Spring barley creates a less dense canopy than wheat and this helps cornfield annuals.
