Spring Barley - May

The growing crop. After seven months of continuous rain over the winter 2000/2001 a dry spell has followed and within three weeks the ground is cracking through lack of moisture!

A heavy weed burden in the barley that will need to be controlled with a herbicide

Spring barley alongside a traditional Cornish hedge rich with flowers.

Detail showing the tillered crop. Note how there are many shoots from the plant at ground level. These are all from a single seed and illustrate how the plant can compensate for poor establishment of the crop.
